I am, therefore, to invite attention to my letter 266/Hong Kong/29 of the 25th of July last, and to suggest for Mr. Chamberlain's consideration the desirability of approaching the Foreign Office with a view to obtaining that island, in the event of the indemnity not being paid in coin. At the same time, the Secretary of State for War trusts that the obvious advantages possessed by Sham Chun may be borne in mind, should an occasion arise in the future enabling us to rectify the existing frontier to the extent of including that place within the limits of our territory.
